J’ouvert : Résilience, Freedom & Fun
J’ouvert is a massive signifier of freedom, spirituality, consciousness and culture curated in a way that is unique to Vancouver. My goal is to explore the ways in which J’ouvert could impact and disrupt the current social norms of the city granting a less inhibited and connected version of what it means to have fun.
This celebration happens from dusk till dawn amongst paint and powder in the air, and the event type is one of the most highly anticipated in Barbados’ Crop Over Season.
Whether a costume, a branded band tee or a simple t-shirt and shorts DIY, come prepared to embrace good music, good drinks, good vibes and a good mess. The only event of its kind where one is excited to leave in worse condition on their worst behaviour.

This event style is multi-generational and with its “come as you are” nature and how deeply its roots run through Barbados’ post colonial history; the challenge presented itself in how it was to be introduced to a brand new audience. (How does one explain rules, customs, traditions that have so long been observed but always left unsaid). Using approachable and interactive methods in the form of stickers, zines and even undertaking the DIY challenge, with myself and my Vancouver based community, of constructing the wire bra led to an outpour of support and interest in my culture and my own experiences growing up with events akin to ones like this.
